Why The ‘Logan’ Amazing Grace Trailer Is Perfect

Logan is due to arrive in theatres very soon and is one of, if not thee, most anticipated movie for most movie goers. With the build up to the release we have been gifted several trailers now but the most recent Logan Amazing Grace Trailer is, by no stretch of the imagination, just perfect. Here’s why.

For those who may have missed it, during Super Bowl 51 Logan appeared during an ad break and it featured a new teaser trailer, full details can be found by clicking here, comprised of new and previous trailer clips of the movie accompanied by the words of Amazing Grace.

Chosen to use the words of Amazing Grace is just genius. Why is that? Well because, in a way, it describes the story of Logan, or Wolverine if you prefer.

We first watched Hugh Jackman play the man with claws way back in 2000 with X-Men. Since then he has gone on to play that role in nine other movies in either major or short cameo roles.

Logan, being the ninth movie, is rumoured to be his last as the Wolverine and so it would not be surprising to have some sort of reflection of the past thrown in there in one way or another.

The previously released trailers have shown that the latest instalment is set way in a post-apocalyptic future which makes sense as the movie is inspired from the Wolverine: Old Man Logan series which is about Logan undergoing his last adventure.

The entire poem, Amazing Grace, is as follows:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now I’m found,
Was blind, but now I see.

’twas Grace that taught, my heart to fear.
And grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear,
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come.
’tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
as long as life endures.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise,
than when we first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now… I see

Only the first two lines were used in the Super Bowl Teaser Trailer, but, to use these words is perfect as the entire poem can be said to describe an individual travelling a winding road through varies obstacles seeking forgiveness and redemption for past endeavours.

Also, you can easily extract different parts of the poem and associate it with one, or several, of the Wolverine movies.

The lines:

I once was lost but now I’m found,
Was blind, but now I see.

Can easily be associated with how Logan had no memory of his past. That he was determined to retrieve those memories and find out what happened to him.

The following:

Through many dangers, toils and snares,

This line can be linked to many accounts of several different movies as he constantly faced danger after danger both before and part of the X-Men.

You can even, if you really stretch your imagination, make the suggestion that Amazing Grace is purposely written for Wolverine, we are not actually suggesting that we are just exaggerating a bit now, but the lines:

’twas Grace that taught, my heart to fear.
And grace, my fears relieved.

If you were to swap out the words Grace for Jean you can argue that this is a clear connection to his love for her. Before Logan met Jean he was all about himself, not that caring, selfish person. Once he met her he feared, not only for her but for his heart being broken.

We can go on and on making other connections both easily and at a stretch of the imagination;

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,

Is a reference of how long Logan has been alive

His word my hope secures.

Describes when he first met Professor X.

The point is that this is why choosing to use Amazing Grace in a teaser trailer was perfect. It wasn’t a wild last minute throw it in sort of moment, it was a perfectly considered and well-delivered decision.
