1: The Origin

The Handmaid’s Tale is based on a novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The novel, of the same name, was originally published in 1985 and has won the Governors General award and Arthur C. Clarke award along with several other award nominations.


2: The Plot

Set in the United States in a dystopian future, under the rule of an evil fundamentalist dictatorship, women are forced to live as a concubine.

3: The Cast and their Roles

There are various roles and cast for The Handmaid’s Tale but the ones you should take note of are, Offred, Serena Joy, Moira and The Commander.

Offred, played by Elisabeth Moss, is our narrator and protagonist of The Handmaid’s Tale. Offred is a handmaid of the household where they are forced to bear children for the elite in society.

Serena Joy, played by Yvonne Strahovski, is the wife of The Commander who is deeply unhappy and in turn, lashes out cruelly to the handmaids.

Moira, played by Samira Wiley, is the friend of Offred who is an independent individual who is not willing to accept her circumstances as a handmaid and repeatedly tries to escape.

The Commander, played by Joseph Fiennes, is the kingpin, or head, of the house where Offred works. Sometimes appearing as a decent individual all may not be as it appears with The Commander.


4: The Location

While The Handmaid’s Tale was set in New England, the Untied States, much of the filming for the TV series took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

5: The Channel

The series is being aired by the streaming network Hulu. The series itself was ordered as a straight-to-series order meaning that the network has some confidence in the show’s success.

6: The Series Length

10 Episodes are reportedly ordered for the series. Whether the network releases all the episodes in one go or staggers them out still remains unclear.


7: The Start Date

26th April 2017. That’s the official date you need to make.


8: The Politics

The timing of the show is playing a big role in world politics. Just as the world seems to be taken a dark turn in party politics The Handmaid’s Tale is released. Comparisons are already being made to the story and everyday life with some fans calling it a warning to what is to come and others saying The Handmaid’s Tale is a guide on how to survive what is coming.


9: The Other Dystopian Tales

Not the only dystopian tale that is out there. Othe novels including 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 are other classic tales of dystopian futures.
